I was dreaming about making a pair of fabulous earrings, but I could not figure out what to make. Then I realized that I had some cotton yarn in my yarn stash, so I made a pair of red fluffy fan earrings.
The earrings are lightweight and fun to wear. They look great with spring and summer outfits, especially casual dresses.
The earrings are very inexpensive to make, so you could make several pairs of these for under $15. You only need about a ¼ skein of 4-ply yarn, bead caps, jump rings and earring wires to make these earrings. If you have extra yarn from another knitting project, then you should use that before purchasing more.
You make the fan like you make a tassel, except that you tie the bundle of yarn in the middle. You do not need fancy tassel making tools – just use your hands!
So, if you are ready to make a pair of stylish, lightweight earrings, let’s begin.
Fluffy Fan Earrings
Lily’s Sugar ‘n Cream cotton yarn in Red (approx. 1/4 skein, but use any leftover cotton yarn that you have)
2 14mm bead caps
2 6mm jump rings
2 earring wires
fabric cement or Krazy Glue
bent nose and flat nose pliers
Dimensions (approximate): 3”w x 1.5” h
Make the bundles
Make the two bundles of yarn for the earrings as follows:
Wrap yarn around 4 fingers 20 times, then slip the bundle off your fingers. Cut a 9” strand of yarn or embroidery and tie the bundle at the center 2 times. Repeat with the other bundle.
Add the bead cap and jump ring
Separate the plies of the strand of yarn, then take two of the plies and thread them through the eye of the tapestry needle.
Pass the needle through the center hole of the bead cap, a jump ring, then back through the center of the bead cap.
Make a knot below the center hole of the bead cap.
Glue the knotted yarn and the bead cap together. Apply more glue underneath the bead cap around the center hole. Repeat with the other bundle.
Allow the glue to dry for approximately 1 hour.
Make the fan
Once dry, take one bundle and cut the loops of the yarn. Turn the bundled yarn so that it is vertical.
Gently bend the edges of the bead cap with the bent nose pliers.
Spread the cut strands of yarn into a fan shape, then separate the plies of each strand of the fan.
Trim excess yarn to even out the edge of the fan. Open the jump ring with the bent nose and flat nose pliers. Attach an earring wire to the jump ring. Close the jump ring.
Make the other earring repeating the instructions above.
Enjoy your new fluffy fan earrings.
