I had a stash of light blue 40mm mussel shell focal components that I never used, so I made earrings with them. The light blue reminds me of the light reflected off the ocean, so I decided to name them ocean blue earrings.

I wanted to make a pair of earrings that was more than a simple jump ring through the focal, so I made chain links of mussel shell drops then attached them to the focals.

The ocean blue earrings are fairly lightweight despite the long chain of mussel shell drops. You could easily wear them all day without any problems. However, I wouldn’t wear them while working out or riding the subway.

The earrings only took about 30 minutes to make, so you could make several pairs in one afternoon. Of course, these earrings work well with any beachy, casual wardrobe. They also make great gifts, so why not start on your Christmas gift list by making a few pairs today.

Here are the instructions.

Instructions

Make the mussel shell chain links

Using the flat nose pliers and the bent nose pliers, open one 4mm jump ring and attach it to a mussel shell drop. Next, attach a 4mm jump ring on one side of the mussel shell drop and another 4mm jump ring to the other side of the mussel shell drop. Close the jump ring.

Open a 4mm jump ring. Attach a mussel shell drop and place it in the middle of the jump ring. Attach another 4mm jump ring to one side of the jump ring and the mussel shell chain link on the other side of the jump ring. Close the jump ring. Repeat these instructions with the third mussel shell drop.

Open a 4mm jump ring. Attach a mussel shell drop to one side of the jump ring and the mussel shell chain link to the other side of the jump ring. Close the jump ring.

Attach an earring wire to the jump ring in the back of the focal. Close the jump ring. Repeat with the other focal.

Attach a rubber earring back to each earring.
