In the last post, I showed you how to make the fabric for the braided purse.
Now, I’m going to show you how to turn the fabric into a purse.
Here are the instructions.
Braided Purse – Making the Purse
braided fabric (see instructions here)
1/8 skein of Lily’s Sugar ‘n Cream Yarn in White
velcro tabs (optional)
For the Strap
Lily’s Sugar ‘n Cream Yarn in Red, White and Hot Blue – 3 strands per color
Make the braided strap
If you have not done so, make the braided strap.
Take the strands of yarn and make a knot at one end. Divide the strands into groups of three. Braid the strands until there is approximately 2″ of yarn left. Make a knot at the end. Trim the tassels.
Soak the braided strap in a solution of (you guessed it) 1 capful of vinegar in a tub of cold water for 15 minutes. Rinse and gently squeeze the excess water. Allow to dry.
Here is the braided strap:
Set the braided strap aside.
Sew the tasseled sides
Sew the tassel left of the seam on the fabric (i.e. center-left tassel) from bottom to top. The needle should now be above the tassel.
Sew the tassel right of the seam on the fabric (i.e. center-right tassel) from top to bottom. The needle should now be below the tassel.
Sew the second left tassel from bottom to top.
Sew the second right tassel from bottom to top.
The tassels should connect in this manner:
Continue in this pattern until you reach the second to last set of tassels.
Sew the second to last tassel on the left from bottom to top.
Do not cut the yarn. You will use this yarn to sew the strap.
Repeat sequence on opposite tasseled side.
Your purse should look like this:
Sew the braided strap
Pin one end of the braided strap between the left and right tassels of one side of the purse.
Bring the yarn around the back of the strap, then through the last tassel on the right from top to bottom.
Remove the safety pin. Sew the yarn through the braided strap from right to left.
Bring the yarn through the last tassel on the left from bottom to top.
Sew through the braided strap from left to right, then through the last tassel on the right from top to bottom.
Bring the yarn through the tassel of the braided strap from top to bottom.
Wrap the yarn around the knot above the tassel of the braided strap, then through the tassel again from top to bottom.
Trim the yarn so that the remaining tail blends into the tassel.
Repeat on the other side.
Apply the velcro
Apply the velcro pieces onto the wrong side of the purse (hooks on one side; eyes on the opposite side).
You’re done! Just allow the velcro to set for approximately 24 hours (or per the package instructions) before using your braided purse.
